Slow Cooker Broccoli Beef

At the Sturgeon house, I'm experimenting with slow cooker recipes.  I'm hoping to create a collection of freeze ahead slow cooker meals for use through the busy months ahead.  Tonight I debuted this recipe to good reviews.

Slow Cooker Broccoli Beef

1 lb. boneless round steak, sliced into thin strips
1 cup beef broth (I used chicken broth.)
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup brown sugar. . . ( I thought it a bit sweet and might cut this down to 1/4 cup the next time.)
1 Tbsp. sesame oil
1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes (This could be increased to make it spicier or you could use chili paste for an extra kick.)
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 small onions, chopped
3 garlic cloves minced
2 Tbsp. cornstarch
Fresh broccoli florets (as desired)
Hot cooked rice

Place slice beef in slow cooker.  (I browned them first in a skillet with a little olive oil.  Once brown I used the same skillet to saute the onions and finally the garlic before placing in the slow cooker.)

In small bowl, combine the broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil and garlic. Pour over beef.   Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours.

About 1/2 before serving stir cornstarch into enough cold water and a bit of the broth from the slow cooker to thicken.  Pour over the content of the slow cooker and stir well.

Add broccoli to slow cooker and stir to combine.  Cover and cook an additional 30 minutes on high.  Serve over hot rice.

Please note:  Time to thicken the sauce will vary depending on the slow cooker.  One of mine gets really hot.  I always cut cooking times when using it.  With it there is no need to bring the contents to a boil to get it to thicken but this will vary depending on your slow cooker.  You will have to adjust the time or methods accordingly.
