Sugar Cookie Cut Outs

This is our favorite cut-out cookie recipe and is passed down from my mom.

Sugar Cookies

1 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla

3 1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter.
Add sugar gradually, creaming until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time and beat well after each addition.
Stir in vanilla.

Sift flour ingredients together.
Gradually add flour mixture to creamed mixture.
Chill thoroughly (at least 3 to 4 hours.)

Roll on well-floured surface to 1/8 to 1/4 inches thick.
Cut into desired shapes
Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes.

Decorate as desired.

We make a simple frosting out of confectioners sugar, a bit of butter and a bit of milk. Sometimes we add food coloring to the frosting and we almost always decorate with sprinkles before the frosting sets.
